Judge Denies Young Thug’s Mistrial Motion

Young Thug’s latest bid for a mistrial in his ongoing RICO case has been denied, despite the judge’s sharp rebuke of the prosecution’s handling of the trial.

Young Thug, real name Jeffery Williams, is facing several charges, including conspiracy under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, along with firearms and drug-related offences. Prosecutors allege that his record label, Young Stoner Life, is a front for a violent criminal gang, Young Slime Life.

Judge Paige Reese Whitaker expressed her frustration with the State’s disorganised presentation on Monday, 30 September, accusing the prosecutors of either intentionally withholding information or being alarmingly unprepared.

The trial – which began in November 2023 – has become Georgia’s longest-running court case due to delays largely attributed to the prosecution.

Judge Whitaker didn’t hold back on her criticism during the court proceedings, at one point saying: “It is baffling to me that somebody with the number of years of experience that you have, time after time after time, continues to seemingly and purposefully hide the ball to the extent you possibly can, for as long as you possibly can.”

Though the mistrial motion was denied, the defence may continue seeking further recourse. The trial is expected to stretch into 2025, with over 100 witnesses still to testify.
